Man-made reefs make it easy for anglers to find the fish.
Dear Capt. Paul:
I’m looking for waypoints for all the rigs out of Hopedale such as the Central Rig, the Dope Boat, etc. I purchased your Fishing Edge files for both sides of Hopedale, but I don’t see any of these structures on it.
Thank you,
Robert
Capt. Paul’s response:
All of the structures are not shown in the Edge program. The program is not designed to be an all-inclusive listing of all the structures in the area.
It is designed to highlight those locations that have been fish-producers in the past or that have been key navigation points. The points are designed to allow you to navigate to and return from the various areas.
Although the major locations are listed, there are certainly many, many other locations, such as other platforms and islands, that can be producers. Many of these other locations are within sight of the listed Edge locations.
The Central Rig is listed in the Hopedale to Mississippi Sound Edge program. It is shown as waypoint CNTRLR, and is plotted at N29 34.692 x W89 07.034.
There are several platforms in the Chandeleur Sound just south and west of the Central rigs. Most of these are within sight of the Central rigs, and are not listed as Fishing Edge locations.
Other platforms include the Cement Rigs. These locations are shown as waypoints CMTRGE and CMTRGW. They are plotted at N29 34.692 x W89 07.034 and N29 41.416 x W89 19.805.
Bay and Lake Eloi are dotted with small and large platforms, some of which are listed as Edge locations. The EDGE program indicates more than 15 locations in the area. There are well over 40 other platforms in the area, most within sight of one another or at least in sight of one of the Edge locations.
Although there are over 250 waypoints listed in the Hopedale/MRGO to Bayou Terre aux Bouefs file, the Dope Boat is not one of them at this time. Future editions will include the Dope Boat as an Edge position.
The Dope Boat was, before Katrina, at or about N29 34.419 x W89 15.859.
Another location that will be added is the Five Wells area, which is an oval in shape and is about .6 of a mile in diameter. There are two larger wells and three smaller platforms.
The group is located about 4.5 miles almost due south of the end of the rock jetty on the southern side of the MRGO. The end of rocks is located at N29 37.738 x W89 19.295. I believe that all of the platforms are still at the location, but it is possible that one could have been moved.
The northernmost of the wells (KM-BS-SL-1227-9) is located at or about N29 33.855 x W89 19.198. The southernmost of the wells (KM-BS-SL-1227-6) is located at or about N29 33.399 x W89 19.446.
All of the platforms can be seen from any one of the five well positions.
Unless otherwise specified, all positions are stated as H,DDD,MM.mmm, and were determined using WGS 84 datum. All headings, bearings and courses are stated in magnetic degrees.
Dear Capt. Paul:
I recently bought your Fishing Edge package for Big Lake, and was wondering if you have something similar for Vermilion Bay.
Thanks,
Harris LaFleur
Capt. Paul’s response:
Thanks for asking about a Capt. Paul’s Fishing Edge of GPS Waypoints for Vermilioni Bay.
Evidently you liked the Fishing Edge file for Calcasieu Lake, as you are asking about another possible Edge location.
Using the Edge program is really a time-saver as well as furnishing some outstanding fishing locations.
I am working on a Capt. Paul’s Fishing Edge for the Vermilion Bay area, but it will not be ready until later this summer or early fall. Watch the Louisiana Sportsman website for the announcement when the Vermilion area will be released.
In the meantime, if there is any way that I can assist you with some waypoints in that area, don’t hesitate to post your request.
