Dear Capt. Paul:
Do you have the coordinates for Seven Mile Rigs, 109, Cognac, Lena and Elf?
Thanks!
Fred Carter
Capt. Paul’s response:
The series of rigs called Seven Mile Rigs is located south of South Pass of the Mississippi River in the Gulf of Mexico.
Leaving Venice, you would proceed down the river to Head of Passes at South Pass and continue in South Pass for about 13 miles past Port Eads to the southernmost Aid to Navigation (Red No. 2, a bell, at about N28 58.695 x W89 06.516).
Proceed on a course of south-southeast at about 157 degrees magnetic for 7.1 miles. You will reach one of the rigs referred to as the Seven Mile Rigs.
I believe that a rig is located at N28 53.125 x W89 03.791. Another of the rigs is .9 miles southwest of the first at N28 52.730 x W89 04.575. Both are in about 450 feet of water.
Cognac (Shell MC-194a) is at or about N28 47.226 x W89 03.639. It is about 16.7 miles from land’s end at South Pass at a bearing of 161 degrees magnetic, and is in block 194 of the Mississippi Canyon. It is about 13 miles northwest of Ensco 7500.
Lena (Exxon MC-280A), I believe, is located in block 280-1 of the Mississippi Canyon at N28 39.820 x W89 08.110. It is about 17.5 miles to the southwest of Ensco 7500.
If the 109 you are speaking about is the MC-109 A platform located near the center of leased block 109 of the Mississippi Canyon area, it is located at or about N28 51.849 x W88 55.816.
As for the Elf platform, Elf Exploration is operating a platform named Virgo in block 823 of the Viosca Knoll. This platform is in 1,130 feet of water, and is located at or about N29 10.936 x W88 10.020.
I can’t guarantee that this is the Elf you are looking for, but it is a facility operated by Elf Exploration, Inc.
Unless otherwise stated, all positions are stated as DDD,MM.MMM, and were determined by using WGS 84 datum. All bearings are in magnetic degrees.
Dear Capt. Paul:
I have a Lowrance Global Map 100 handheld. The problem I have is the map shows hundreds of tiny squares and exclamation point things cluttering up my screen.
I tried going to deleting icons, but that doesn’t seem to work. I’d really appreciate if you can be of assistance to me. I’ve been trying for months to resolve this problem.
Thank you very much,
Jerry Leicher
Capt. Paul’s response:
First, try setting the Map Page detail to the Normal setting. See pages 13 to 15 of your owner’s manual in order to understand the settings and how to make the settings operable. This should remove many of the points of interest icons that are on the screen. This may solve your dilemma — if the points of interest are the clutter that you are speaking about.
If the clutter is your own waypoints, then check out pages 18 and 19. It describes how to select icons and ways to delete only certain ones, or you can even “Hide From View” your waypoints.
You can download an owner’s manual from the web site at www.lowrance.com if you don’t have the one that came with the unit.
CORRECTION: The September 2006 column included inaccurate coordinates for the Cement Rigs, a.k.a. the Concrete Rigs. The correct coordinates are N29 41.072 x W89 17.855 for the east rig (CMTRGE), and N29 41.416 x W89 19.805 for the west rig (CMTRGW).
The Central Rig is located at or about N29 34.690 x W89 07.034 (CNTRLR).
