Elmer’s Island surf fishing out of control
The surf of Elmer’s Island is still teeming with big speckled trout, a bite that’s not expected to last much longer. Longtime Elmer’s anglers Sammy Romano and Cabot Corso hosted me yesterday and despite some wild boaters nearby, we wrecked ‘em.
The bite started before 6:00 a.m., with Corso catching back-to-back trout on his first two casts before even getting his feet wet.
“This bite happens beginning with the first full moon of March and sometimes April,” Corso said. “It usually peters out around the Fourth of July, but this year it’s still going, and it’ll end soon.”
Romano, manager of Chag’s Sporting Goods in Metarie, has fished Elmer’s for years and says that Corso is hands-down one of the best surf fishermen in Louisiana. Corso scored 24 trout yesterday, mostly on MirrODines and Corky’s baits. I was using Live Target sardines and topwater mullets. Naturally, the topwaters scored larger fish, including a 4 1/2 pounder.
All in all, we put 55 trout on the beach by 9:30 a.m. Again, this bite is dying soon, so call in sick and do whatever you have to do to get there and be a part of the action.
