Knee-deep and catching monster speckled trout

As director of Speckled Truth, an organization that, among other things, posts pictures of absolutely gargantuan speckled trout to social media, Chris Bush knows when and where the big girls are biting.

So a year and a half ago, when I fished with Bush near his home waters of Corpus Christi, Texas, he mentioned I should come back during the winter and fish with him near Port Mansfield, where the giants live.

I wasn’t able to make it happen last year, but early in 2023, we put some dates on the calendar for December, and lined it up with Bush’s buddy Capt. Joe Prado, who guides out of the South Texas port.

Last week, I made the 10-hour journey from my home in South Louisiana, and entered a world where my favorite fish species grows to sizes that must be seen to be believed.
