Determining GPS courses

Dear Capt. Paul:

Recently, a skipper of a vessel put a waypoint into the GPS, and the display showed the direction and distance to that point, but it is not the same as the course to steer plotted on the chart.

Why is this? What would cause this?

I have some coordinates directly from a buddy’s GPS, but they are not bringing me to the same location as his GPS? Is there more than one way to measure/input coordinates? What are we missing here? Why won’t they work?[…]
