Oil slick being investigated out of Baptiste Collete

Capt. Ron Price was heading out to Breton Sound to put his clients on some fish this morning (June 8), but was surprised when he came across an oil slick about 2 miles northeast of Baptiste Collette.

“It stunk really bad,” Price said.

Photos and a short video showing the slick are being obtained by LouisianaSportsman.com, and will be posted as soon as possible.[…]

Mississippi River water began flowing through the Bonnet Carre spillway this morning (May 9) after the Army Corps of Engineers opened a portion of the control structure to relieve pressure on the levees protecting New Orleans, according to the Associated Press.[…]

Feds propose fall gag grouper recreational season, upping commercial quota

The National Marine Fisheries Service is proposing the setting the recreational gag grouper season to run Sept. 16 through Nov. 15, according to the agency’s newsletter. Public comment on the proposal is being accepted through May 6.

The proposal, announced April 21 in the Federal Register and apparently coming at the behest of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, also includes a temporary rule to reset the commercial gag grouper quota and continue the suspension of the use of red grouper multi-use individual quota commercial allocation.[…]

Former LWFC member Mouton indicted in alleged influence-peddling scheme

Former Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission member Henry Mouton has been indicted for allegedly accepting nearly $500,000 in illegal payoffs to keep a New Orleans landfill closed, according to news reports.

The 64-year-old Mouton, who served on the Commission from 2003 through 2008, was indicted Friday, the Associated Press reported. He is charged with conspiracy, receiving illegal payoffs and making false statements to federal agents, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said in news reports. Letten also is apparently moving to have Mouton’s assets forfeited.[…]
