No-wake zones implemented in Assumption Parish

Opening of Morganza Spillway expected to cause backwater flooding

Assumption Parish officials have implemented no-wake zones near all camps and houses in anticipation of the opening of the Morganza Spillway, expected today (May 14), according to news reports.

State officials announced yesterday that the Morganza spillway should open to relieve pressure on levees from the rising Mississippi River.

Assumption Parish officials said they expect Lake Verret to rise 2 1/2 feet when the Atchafalaya Spillway is flooded.

Sheriff’s deputies and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents will patrol the waters to enforce the no-wake zones.
