Cutoff angler wins CCA-Louisiana STAR tournament’s Chevy pickup truck

Duet caught tagged redfish at the East Timbalier rocks Sunday evening

Jake Duet went to bed Sunday night dreaming of a brand new 2014 Chevy Silverado pickup, and thankfully for him, things didn’t turn into a nightmare Monday morning.

The 19-year-old from Cutoff had to endure a restless night wondering if the tagged redfish he caught late Sunday would be the first officially submitted in the CCA Louisiana STAR tournament because there was nowhere to weigh it in when he got back.

“After catching the fish I realized all the weigh stations would be closed on Sunday night, so I had to wait until today to bring it in,” said Duet, “I didn’t sleep at all that night.”

He headed to Bridge Side Marina on Grand Isle first thing Monday morning and made it official, winning the 2014 Silverado courtesy of the Super Chevy Dealers in Baton Rouge, Acadiana and Lake Charles.

“I know CCA and the Super Chevy Dealers couldn’t be happier to give this great young man a truck,” said Rad Trascher, STAR tournament director. “Duet’s winning fish was released at the Fourchon Bridge and made its way all the way out to Timbalier. That fish was on the move.”

Duet only registered for the STAR tournament Thursday at Port Fourchon Marina ahead of the Fourchon Oilman’s Fishing Tournament.

There are now still 47 redfish with 2014 STAR tags swimming and eligible to be caught between now and Labor Day when the tournament ends.

The next nine tagged redfish caught by registered anglers will win a 21-foot Nautic Star with a 150 hp four-stroke Mercury outboard and a Mike Gerald’s McClain trailer valued at around $30,000, Trascher said.
