Best deer-tracking equipment

Successful tracking does not require any hi-tech equipment, although special lights and Luminol-type products are available.

But there are some basic things to carry when on the trail.

Thibodaux’s Josh Chauvin, who hunts on public land, said one of the most-important accessories is hunter orange for safety purposes.

“Wandering around thick brush on all fours in camo is an easy way to look like a buck yourself,” Chauvin said.

Trackers should always have some toilet paper for marking a trail, and adequate food and water. Preventing hunger and thirst allows you to stay on the track longer and focus on taking your time.

Binoculars can also be quite helpful, particularly if you know approximately where the deer went down.

“Approach this area as slowly as possible, looking for any movements with your binoculars,” Chauvin said. “A flickering tail or ears may give a wounded buck away before he gets up.”

You should also carry a compass, GPS, flashlight (with extra batteries) and a knife. The compass and GPS are necessary because you might have to enter unfamiliar woods and run the risk of getting lost. Having a flashlight allows you to stay on the track after dark, and you can field dress the deer with the knife before dragging him out.
