Things to know before you go to Breton Island

• Breton Island is a National Wildlife Refuge and home to a huge population of seabirds. No walking is allowed in the grassy section on the east end of the island where the birds roost. If you want to walk across the island to fish the other side, do so on the sandy beach section away from the birds.

• If you travel out by boat, respect wade-anglers by giving them ample room to fish. The island is large, and fish can be scattered anywhere along it or among the smaller islands.

• Breton Island is a great place to bring your kayak, something becoming increasingly popular.
