7-pound mule trout caught at Grand Isle

Tommy Vidrine caught and released this 7-pound mega-trout on Tuesday, April 23, along the backside of Grand Isle. The catch was preceded by April’s full moon on the 19th which triggered trout to start moving toward coastal waters to spawn. Conditions were optimized for big trout at the beginning of the week as strong incoming tides on Monday and Tuesday and strong Southeast winds pushed green salty water into waters surrounding the island.

Vidrine caught this beauty while freelining a 4-inch pogie on a #2 silver khale hook in about 2 feet of water.

“He was basking in the sun and ready to spawn,” he said.
