Live shrimp makes things a little easier

Believe it or not, live shrimp are often still available in Delacroix for much of this month.

“The shrimp season stays open until, like, mid January for the bait guys,” Capt. Jack Payne said. “So we’ll have live shrimp for a lot of January.”

The shrimp that fill marinas’ tanks this time of year are almost always caught in the deep waters of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, and they’re usually not monsters.

But speckled trout absolutely can’t resist them.

“Live shrimp is still the No. 1 bait just about any time of the year,” Payne said. “But there are guys out there who love to catch them on artificials, like me, but live shrimp brings the success rate up tremendously.”
