How to guard against hypothermia while kayak fishing

Hypothermia is as much a danger during the winter in Louisiana as it is in northern climates. But, using common sense can make all the difference.

Here are a few things anglers should consider:

• Always layer clothing when hunting or fishing. When winter activities increase your body temperature and causes you to sweat, wet underclothing can lead to rapid cooling and chill, from a loss of body heat. Dressing in layers allows you to remove a coat or sweater to regulate your body temperature better.

• The head is where most body heat is lost. It’s easy for a hat to blow off when on the water going from place to place, so be sure to pack a spare sweater cap and neck-gaiter. These items take up little space and can be easily carried.

• If small children are along on your winter outing, they need fuel internally to keep warm. Pack plenty of snacks, and if you see them starting to shiver, it’s time to go in — even if you leave the fish biting.
