Another national wildlife refuge that is an absolute must for canoe and kayak anglers is Lacassine. As in years past, the refuge’s pool that is reserved for non-motorized boats has produced monster bass this spring.
The March 15 opening day produced a record bass for the refuge that weighed in officially at 12 1/2 pounds.
“The non-motorized part of the refuge is what we call Unit B,” Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge Manager Richard Myers said. “It’s roughly about 800 acres that is designated as trolling motor only or canoe and kayak. The majority of anglers use kayaks.
“This year I expect those who are going in there are doing as good as the rest of the refuge. It’s been really good in Unit B. This spring in late April they were catching quite a few sac-a-lait. The reason why it’s non-motorized is so folks who canoe or kayak don’t have to worry about boats running by them, and where they can have kind of their own place.”
There is no boat launch into the Unit B area; canoe and kayak anglers have to launch off the side of the road to get into the Unit B.
