This time of year, every falling tide pulls white shrimp from backwater marshes, making them sitting ducks for hungry speckled trout looking to fatten up for the winter.
Early in the morning, the shrimp are high in the water column, and the specks are there with them, pushing them through the surface and sometimes into the awaiting beaks of diving sea gulls.
But as the sun gets higher in the sky, the shrimp move to the bottom, where the fish continue to feast. That’s where I found them this week.
