Scratching the marsh-fishing itch

Nolan McNeil, 14, has spent nearly his entire life in South Louisiana, but is high-tailing it to the rolling hills of Southern Indiana, where his family is settling on an 80-acre woodlot.

He’ll get to feed his passion for deer, turkeys and largemouth bass, but there aren’t quite as many redfish, flounder and speckled trout in the Hoosier State. So to give him a send-off and scratch the marsh-fishing itch for a bit, I took him this week into the nearly boiling water of the South Louisiana coast, where we found an area that was loaded with fish and discovered the one bait they wanted.
