One of the greatest aspects about having spent three decades in outdoor media is manufacturers frequently send me unsolicited packages loaded with new lures they hope I’ll introduce to my audience.
Unless the timing is perfect for what local fish are biting in that particular season, the lures go immediately onto pegs in my tackle shed, where they’ll wait until they fit the style of fishing I plan to do on my next trip.
That’s what happened with one particular lure that caught my eye over the weekend. I really have no idea how or when I got it, but I was looking for a jerkbait that dove 3 to 5 feet to cast along the rocks lining the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet. I also wanted the lure to be large, since I was hoping to run across one of the lunker speckled trout that hang out there this time of year.
One of the lures I found that fit all the parameters of my search was a chartreuse shad-colored Berkley Juke. I had never fished this lure before, but I liked the way it looked and sounded, and was optimistic about its potential.
I tied it to my jerkbait rod, and hit the water very early Sunday morning.
To say that the lure exceeded my expectations is an understatement. It was quite productive for some really nice speckled trout, and will definitely be tied to the end of my line again quite soon.
