The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division and Louisiana Wildlife Agent’s Association (LWAA) raised over $13,000 for a cancer patient by allowing agents to participate in “No Shave November” during November and December.

LDWF agents and the LWAA awarded $13,650 to the mother of an LDWF agent during a ceremony on Dec. 15 at the LDWF office in Lafayette.

Agents volunteered to participate in a “No Shave November” fundraising effort by growing facial hair during November and December and then donating money to the LWAA. The LWAA then matched the agents’ donation of $6,825. A total of $13,650 was presented to cancer patient Patricia Melancon, the mother of Corporal Jason Marks who patrols the St. Martin Parish area.

“We’ve been doing this for a few years now and the agents are always excited to participate, as it is their only chance during the year to grow facial hair while in uniform,” said Col. Chad Hebert, head of the Enforcement Division. “This year is extra special as we extended the event into December and the money raised went to an agent’s family that has been dealing with an illness and subsequent health bills.”

“This was such a great idea. I am so proud of our agents,” said LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet said after speaking to Corporal Marks and his family.
