Still time to register if you’re planning on fishing this weekend, Trascher says
We’re down to the final days that anglers will be on the lookout for tagged redfish and speckled trout in the CCA-Louisiana STAR Tournament, but it’s not too late to register if you plan on hitting the water over the long Labor Day weekend.
“There is still time to register,” said Rad Trascher, tournament director. “In the past week, we’ve had three lead changes and one tagged redfish caught by an unregistered angler.
“So there is still time. People are still catching good fish, and there are plenty of tagged fish still out there.”
Trascher said the tournament officially ends when scales close at 5 p.m. on Labor Day, but a tagged redfish before then will still earn you a 21-foot NauticStar powered by a Mercury 150 4-stroke with a Mike Gerald trailer package.
And the first four tagged speckled trout entered qualify for a $2,500 tackle package.
“Two tagged trout were caught in Cocodrie by unregistered anglers,” he said. “If we don’t have any winners in the tagged trout division, we’re going to do a random drawing from all entrants for those four prizes.”
If you’re fishing with kids this weekend, Trascher urged parents to consider signing their children up for the tournament. Kids who catch a speckled trout or flounder over 14 inches are eligible for a great prize in the Youth Division.
“If you haven’t gotten your kids entered into the STAR, this is the last weekend to do it,” he said. “Right now, you’re looking at something like a 1 in 50 or 1 in 100 chance they’re going to win a boat, motor and trailer package valued at more than $5,000 dollars.
“The kids have to be CCA members, which is $10 a year, and they get their own publication and their own membership, and it’s free to enter the STAR Tournament. “
And getting Trascher proof of the kids’ catch is easy, he said.
“They can bring it to one of the weigh stations, or just send a picture of it to me with the fish on a ruler and the kid in the background,” he said. “My email address is rad@ccalouisiana.com.”
After the scales close Monday afternoon, Trascher and the CCA staff work to contact all of the participating weigh stations and then confirm all entrants and formulate the final leaderboard.
“The leaderboard will be finalized on the website, pending polygraph examinations, later that week,” Trascher said.
