The Scott Bullitt Big Bass Benefit to be held on Saturday, Sept. 26
A fishing tournament benefitting the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agent who was shot in the back during a traffic stop in May is scheduled to take place later this month on Lake D’Arbonne.
The Scott Bullitt Big Bass Benefit Tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with cash and prizes slated for six hourly payouts, plus four cash awards for the overall biggest bass of the day.
The entry fee is $100 per angler, and applications are available locally at Toledo Tackle in Monroe and West Monroe, the Honey Hole in West Monroe, Terzias Tackle in Ruston and Farmerville Flower Shop in Farmerville. Entry applications also can be downloaded here.
Bullitt, who is now back at home in Jonesboro, was shot on Thursday, May 21, near the Wham Break Boat Launch in Ouachita Parish, and suffered extensive damage to his vertebrae and spinal cord. Suspected shooter Luke Jarrod Hust was arrested later than day and remains in the Ouachita Correctional Center.
Event organizer Josh Harris is prepping for a big turnout from area bass fishermen.
“I’m hoping for anywhere between 150 and 200 boats,” Harris said. “There should be a good group of guys that come out.”
Based on 100 entries, the tournament will pay out $1,000 in cash and prizes every two hours, followed up by awarding four large cash prizes for the day’s four largest fish. The overall big bass will earn $1,000, he said.
In addition to the cash awarded during the tournament, numerous door prizes will be given out, and a silent auction will be held that evening.
“Several rods and reels, tackle boxes, gear, clothing articles — we have just a whole array of stuff to give out,” Harris said. “If you’re an outdoorsman, you’ll enjoy the door prizes.”
