It’s the holiday season, and that means Calcasieu Lake speckled trout are hitting the hard stuff.
Born and raised in St. Bernard Parish, Mike Herrmann Jr. earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Southeastern Louisiana University after graduating from Chalmette High School.
Mike began hunting ducks with his family at the age of 10 on a small lease in Hopedale. Duck hunting became an obsession at an early age and has remained a passion ever since. Mike spent many days afield hunting the marshes from Venice to the Pearl River.
In the fall of 1997, an 18-year-old Herrmann began guiding duck hunts in the coastal town of Reggio. At that time, Herrmann had already become proficient at duck calling, boat handling and effectively navigating the tidal marshes of St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes.
Since then, Herrmann and his guides have taken thousands of guests, from all across the United States, into the coastal marshes to enjoy some of the best duck hunting in the country. For 30 years, Herrman has seen many different trends and theories on hunting, migrations, habitat, regulations, equipment and ideas as varied as the ducks themselves. Herrmann has seen nature’s cycle go from good years to bad and back to good again several times. He has spent mornings in the blind with folks from all walks of life, from zookeepers to CEOs and children to seasoned grand-dads.
Herrmann currently is employed as an environmental resource specialist where he regularly works on marsh and wetland projects. In the fall and winter of the year, he is a duck-hunting guide out of Delacroix Island, where he regularly shares his blinds with his guests on private leases and family owned property.
