The annual Wildlife Workshop and Field Day will be on Feb. 27 at the Bob R.Jones-Idlewild Research Station in Clinton.
The workshop – co-sponsored by the LSU Ag Center, the Quality Deer Management Association’s South Louisiana Branch and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries – begins at 7:30 a.m.
Pre-registration costs $30 if paid by Feb. 22, with the fee jumping to $40 thereafter. Participants also can include annual QDMA membership for $55 (by Feb. 22) or $65 (after Feb. 22). Lunch will be provided at the close of the event.
Participants will rotate through five seminars conducted by various experts. The seminars and speakers are:
• Report on the 2009-10 Deer Season in Louisiana by LDWF’s Scott Durham.
• Management Options for Feral Hogs – Texas Agrilife Extension Service Specialist Billy Higginbotham.
• Techniques for Controlling Nuisance Wildlife to Benefit White-Tailed Deer by USDA Wildlife Services’ Walter Cotton.
• Techniques to Avoid when Establishing Food Plots by Dearl Sanders.
• Choosing the Proper Caliber Firearm and Load for Various Shooting Conditions by Remington Arms’ Shawn Benbow.
The research station is on Idlewild Road off Highway 67 (Plank Road). From Baton Rouge, take Interstate 110 north to the Metro Airport exit, and turn right on Harding Boulevard. Turn left on Highway 67 and drive approximately 25 miles to Idlewild Road. Turn right, and drive two miles to the station entrance.
