How to prepare a trophy buck for mounting

This is one of the big bucks Pam Streeter Garrett helped her dad mount.

Six critical steps

Putting on her taxidermy hat, Pam Streeter Garrett said these steps are critical for maximizing full shoulder trophy deer mounts.

Step 1 – Keep the deer cool.

Step 2 – Leave plenty of hide, and if in doubt, leave more.

Step 3 – Freeze the head and hide as soon as possible if you’re not going straight to the taxidermist.

Step 4 – When skinning the deer, make the first cut 8 inches behind the front legs and ring around the body.

Step 5 – Then cut a ring around the legs at the knee.

Step 6 – Peel the legs out and skin the hide down to the neck.
