West Monroe man sentenced in federal court for killing bald eagle

Eagle killed April 4, 2011, in Franklin Parish, LDWF discovered.

A West Monroe man was lost his hunting privileges, received a fine, and was sentenced to unsupervised probation Jan. 3 for killing a bald eagle in the spring of 2011, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.

Jeffrey M. Miles, 23, was fined $2,525, lost his hunting privileges for three years and must serve three years of unsupervised probation in connection with the April 4 killing of the mature bald eagle in Franklin Parish, the LDWF said.

Miles was sentenced in federal court.

The judgment is the result of an investigation begun by LDWF agents after finding a dead bald eagle in a drainage ditch along Camphouse Road.

After a thorough investigation and receiving tips from the public through the department’s Operation Game Thief hotline, agents cited Miles on April 22 for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

Miles entered a guilty plea on Sept. 19.
