Volunteers needed for annual Crab Trap Rodeo on Sabine Lake this Saturday

Effort based out of Johnson’s Bayou boat launch in Cameron Parish

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is hosting the 2015 Derelict Crab Trap Rodeo this Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Johnson’s Bayou boat launch in Cameron Parish.

According to a press release, the event will be located off Highway 563 on Deep Bayou Road, and will be conducted with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on shared waters within Sabine Lake.

The removal program, which was initiated by LDWF in 2004 to address ghost-fishing mortality of blue crabs,  as well as the removal of navigation hazards, has resulted in the disposal of more than 24,000 crab traps.

Licensed crab fishermen are reminded that all remaining crab traps in the closure area will be considered abandoned and may be removed by agency personnel or volunteers.

Volunteer boat owners will be needed to maximize trap collection, as well as  dockside volunteers who can help with unloading and stacking traps, the release states.

So that LDWF can better coordinate the effort, volunteers are encouraged to register in advance by clicking here.

LDWF representatives and partners will be available at Johnson’s Bayou boat launch beginning at 8 a.m. to distribute instructions, maps and supplies to volunteers.
