Marine forecast calls for windy week ahead
Finding protected waters will be key for much of this week, as small craft advisories have been posted in some areas through Tuesday afternoon, with at least 10- to 15-knot winds forecast all the way through Friday.
Capt. Jakamo Laboureur, with Jakamo South Fishing Adventures in Shell Beach, likes the protection offered by lots of the cover in the Biloxi Marsh, and says the specks haven’t disappointed.
“The trout have been in there pretty good,” he said. “We really started catching some nice fish this past week in the 14- to 17-inch range, really solid marsh fish.”
At times, though, white trout have been an issue, he said.
“The white trout are kind of thick, so sometimes you get on a good little bite and they just kind of take over,” Laboureur said. “Sometimes you’ve got to make a move, go to the next point and start over.”
Stump Lagoon, Muscle Bay and Pete’s Lagoon have all been pretty consistent producers, he said.
“Pretty much all the big bays, anywhere you have passes and moving water,” he said.
His groups have caught specks with live shrimp from Campo’s Marina, as well as on plastics from Deadly Dudley and the Matrix Vortex shad, he said. And he’s had success using an avocado-colored artificial with red flakes in dirtier water.
“I have guys who come and have their own preferences and they’ll be throwing whatever they want,” he said. “When you find them eating, it almost doesn’t matter.
“The main thing is to keep moving. You may not sit in one spot and catch your limit, but they’ve been pretty cooperative.”
Nice redfish can be taken along the shorelines on dead shrimp, with big bull reds biting off of the passes, he said.
With a windy week ahead, finding protected areas is key, he said.
“Get in those protected pockets, pick up a few fish, drift through the area and catch what you can,” he said. “If you do another drift and don’t catch anything move. Find something similar close by and do it over. Work your area.
“You’ll be surprised at what you can find and figure out.”
