Chalmette native Mike Herrmann discovered that redfish would pounce on his huge, custom-made lures while testing them on marsh bass.
A new strategy was born.
He built a 7-inch mullet-shaped bait out of cypress, painting it accordingly. The bait was lipped, with one joint and an instant success.
Redfish devoured it. He caught red after red on it until it was beaten and battered beyond use — but before retiring it, Herrmann used it to make a mold, and successfully duplicated the big mullet bait.
It’s now one of his favorites, and he discovered that speckled trout will readily attack it, as well.
He’s made a few forays into speckled trout country and had success catching some trout, but so far not the monsters he’s looking for.
