Martin, Breaux win Cabela’s Speckled Trout USA event

Houma anglers Jonathan Martin and Justin Breaux weigned in 11.69 pounds during the Cabela’s Speckled Trout USA Tournament Trail stop in Cocodrie on Saturday (Oct. 2) to pocket the $3,000 first-place prize money.

The team also weighed in the day’s big trout, which weighed 2.59 pounds and put an extra $500 in Cabela’s gift certificates in their pockets.

Martin and Breaux caught their fish on the west side of Whiskey Pass using white Tsunami lures and shrimp. They caught nearly 100 fish to put their winning stringer together.

In second place was the Gonzales team of Marty Bourque and Glenn Robertson with a total weight of 6.2 pounds and earning $1,500. Bourque and Robertson were fishing on Lake Berry using blue moon/chartreuse-and-white D.O.A. lures. The team only caught five fish all day but it was enough for the second-place finish because only five trout per team could be weighed.

Third place went to Dwayne Chapman of Minden and Richard Raley of Bossier City, who weighed 5.99 pounds and earned $1,000. Chapman and Raley fished Sister Lake and Duck Pass using 3-inch gulf shrimp and white mullet lures to catch about 20 fish for the day.

Kevin Mercer of Port Allen and Randy Sowards of Brusly took fourth place with a weight of 5.77 pounds, earning a new 80-pound thrust  Minn Kota trolling motor. Mercer and Sowards were fishing on Lost Lake using 3-inch white curly tail Gulp! lures to catch nearly 100 fish for the day, including big red fish for the day at 6.2 pound.

That red fish netted the team $500.

Fifth place went to Gonzales’ Brad Lambert and Chad Bergeron of Prairieville, who weighed in 3.32 pounds and took home a new Humminbird fish finder. Lambert and Bergeron fished Sea Breeze Bayou using blue moon chartreuse and white Gulp!. The team caught a total of 8 fish for the day.
