Huge speck part of ‘most-epic bite,’ Baton Rouge angler says
A Baton Rouge angler fought a heavy chop March 5 while fishing East Timbalier Island, but it was worth the effort because the speckled trout were eager to slurp up his bait, according to one web report.
And the specks were quality fish, with Rennie Carter’s largest tipped the scales at 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
“I knew it was a speckled trout. It came up right away, and started shaking its head,” Carter told NOLA.com. “Three weeks ago, I caught a 7-7 at (Calcasieu) Lake while wade-fishing, so I had just seen one a few weeks ago.
“When this one hit the net, I knew it was a 7-pounder.”
The 29-inch speck fell for a 1/4-ounce jig rigged with a chicken-on-a-chain-colored Saltwater Assassin fished.
Carter was fishing alone, so netting the big fish wasn’t easy.
“I fought him for a while,” he said. “He made a couple runs around the boat. You know how it is, trying to net a fish like that by yourself. It was a little crazy. I took my time, and made sure I got him. It was awesome.”
The trip was one that he won’t soon forget.
“I had that 7-11, and I broke off another about 5 (pounds) and another about 4 (pounds),” Carter said.” At 9 o’clock, I cranked up the motor and went in. I had 25 trout, and not one of them was under 2 pounds.
“It was the most-epic bite I’ve had out there in a long time, considering the size of the fish.”
