Construction delays extend Elmer’s Island closure through Labor Day

Mechanical issues and bad weather to blame, LDWF says

If you were planning on making your way out to Elmer’s Island this long Labor Day Weekend, make new plans.

According to a press release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, mechanical issues and bad weather will keep the island closed through Sept. 6, with the opening scheduled for Sept. 7.

The island was originally set to reopen on Aug. 22, and then again on Aug. 29, but the delays decreased production on the beach restoration project being constructed by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.

Keep in mind when the island does reopen, no vehicles will be allowed beyond the existing public parking area.
