Both had undersized speckled trout, LDWF says
Enforcement agents with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries ticketed two men fishing along Highway 1 between Fourchon and Grand Isle for alleged fishing violations, according to a news release.
Agents cited Joel A. Tyler, 50, of Lena, and Le Chien 38, of Folsom, for possession of undersized speckled trout. Tyler also was cited for possessing over the limit of specks, and Chien was additionally cited for angling without basic and saltwater fishing licenses, the release states.
Agents were on patrol on Highway 1 when they spotted the two subjects fishing off the side of the road. Agents allegedly found Tyler in possession of 32 specks, with four of those being undersized. Agents allegedly found Chien in possession of 217 white trout, 22 croakers and four specks, with one being undersized, according to the release.
Licensed fishermen are allowed 25 speckled trout per person per day in the Grand Isle area, and they must be at least 12 inches long.
Taking over the limit and undersized speckled trout each brings a $100 to $350 fine and up to 30 days in jail. Angling without basic or saltwater fishing licenses each carries up to a $50 fine and 15 days in jail.
Tyler may also face civil restitution totaling more than $925 for the replacement value of the specks, the release states.
There is no size or possession limit on white trout, but because he had no fishing licenses and legally couldn’t possess any fish, Chien may be responsible for civil restitution totaling $1,061 for the replacement value of the white trout, croakers and speckled trout, according to the release.
Agents seized the fish and donated them to a local charity.
