The scribe

Jim Looney is more than the average angler, with 12 fishing booklets to his credit. The books focus on how to catch bass, bream and sac-a-lait in the Grand Bayou-Lake Verret area, as well as the Atchafalaya Basin, and redfish and speckled trout in Pointe au Chien.

The book on fishing for bream and sac-a-lait has a history chapter, along with chapters on understanding water flow, best baits and identifying best fishing areas.

Best of all, it contains detailed fishing maps with numbered hotspots. All are easy to read and packed with information.

After writing his first book, “How, When and Where to fish for Redfish & Specs in Pointe Aux Chenes Area,” he sent a blind copy to Bob Scearce.

The Old Beachcomber, a pioneer television personality and Morning Advocate newspaper sports writer, called him and went on a trip to the area with him, catching 110 redfish.

A long-term friendship was formed, interrupted only by Scearce’s death.

Besides his books, Looney wrote an outdoors tips column for five small south Louisiana newspapers for years and was active in the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association.

Looney’s books may be purchased online at Louisianafishingbooks.com. Cost is $12.95 per book.
