McConnell’s 3.46-pounder is third Top 5 fish caught there in last week
For the third time in eight days, Poverty Point Reservoir State Park has yielded a potential Top 5 crappie for the Louisiana record books.
The amazing run on the 2,700-acre lake north of Delhi started last Thursday, Feb. 25, when Twayne Hosea caught the biggest white crappie ever at Poverty Point — a 3.52-pounder that, if certified by the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association, will become the new No. 2-ranked sac-a-lait in the state.
Earlier this week, Hosea’s twin brother Dwayne caught a 3.48-pounder in the same vicinity that could rank as No. 3.
On Thursday, the hot streak continued when Rodger McConnell weighed in a 3.46-pounder that will rank as the No. 4 crappie if all the necessary paperwork is filed.
Jennifer Thompson, with Poverty Point Reservoir State Park, said McConnell came in around 1 p.m. Thursday to weigh his three biggest fish. He didn’t say where he caught them or with what lure, and didn’t leave any contact information.

“I don’t think he was ready to give that honey hole up.”
The 3.46-pounder might have even been a slightly heavier fish — Thompson said McConnell caught it early Thursday morning and waited until early afternoon to come in and weigh his fish on Poverty Point’s certified scales.
“He was thinking that it weighed 3 pounds,” she said. “When he put it on the scale, his eyes just lit up.”
According to the LOWA record books, the No. 1-ranked sac-a-lait in the state is a 3.8-pound slab caught by Tim Ricca on Lake Verret in May of 2010. They way things are going now at Poverty Point, that record could possibly fall in the next couple of weeks.
“I’m looking for that No. 1,” Thompson said.
