Tower above it all

Craig Graham and I looked across a Caney Lake cove and saw another sight-fisherman who had a distinct advantage: His front deck was rigged out with a stainless steel tower.

“That’s what I’m getting for my boat,” Graham said. “It just allows you to see better.”

The reason is that it changes the angle at which he is looking into the water. The higher he can get, the more water he can search without moving his boat.

“It doesn’t allow you to see deeper, but it allows you to see farther from the boat,” Graham said.

His tower was completed in time for this year’s spawn, and he said he’s been happy with it.

Of course, being 30 inches or so over the deck can make using a trolling motor a challenge. But Graham uses a remote-control, so he isn’t locked to a foot pedal.

It also allows him freedom to roam the boat.

“If I’m passing a bed, I can walk down the side of the boat watching it without stopping,” Graham explained.
