Lure Review: Super Lizard SI

This 7-inch salt-infused soft plastic lizard from Mister Twister is a bass magnet

Minden-based Mister Twister unveiled a salty, sandy and seductive new product late last year in the 7-inch long Super Lizard Salt Infused soft plastic that drives bass to bitin’, especially during spring.

Greg Yates of Oak Point, Texas, knows all about the lure of the Super Lizard SI from Mister Twister. As a 14-year pro staff veteran, he had a say in the planning and the way it was built.

Yates, vice president of the Telecom Division of NorthStar Energy Services, and long-time Mister Twister sales manager Darryl Laurent, teamed up to create the new 7-inch long Super Lizard Salt Infused soft plastic.

“When Darryl first called me about (designing) the bait, we talked about what really makes a lizard tick?” he said. “What makes bass hit a lizard a little harder? Is it the action? Is it the time of year? We first started the conversation at the end of 2023. We keyed on different things.”

Before the 7-inch long Super Lizard SI was introduced late last year, his go-to Mister Twister soft plastic for big bass was a 4-inch Poc’it Hawg Raiser. Now it’s a toss-up between it and the Super Lizard SI.

“It’s not the same lizard,” Yates said. “It’s not your ordinary lizard. I think we’ve got a winner. You can fish it so many different ways.”

A wider ribbontail than previous soft plastic lizards supplements the new lizard’s appendages, two curled “legs” on each side of its body.

Sand colors

The “salt infused” addition makes a crucial difference, too, the designers agreed, but they wanted to add another feature to take it “to take it to the next level.” That’s why the “sand” was the coup de grace.

“That flash of the underbelly, I guess, triggers their predatory instinct. It presents that natural look,” Yates said about the flakes. “When you slow the bait down it’s not so much about the action of the appendages (appendages and wider tail). When it rolls up, there’s a little flash from the (sand) flake (that gets their attention). It’s almost like rolling a jerkbait.”

It’s the “sand” colors on the belly of each of the Super Lizard SI models that make it even more deadly, particularly in the spring when bass are spawning, according to Yates.

“If you look at a waterdog (a North American salamander), that lighter underbelly stands up, like its head’s down in the nest,” he said. “We think that keys the natural instinct. They get so excited and will not turn loose. Listen, it’s all about making the bait as natural as it can be.”

A reliable bait

Mister Twister’s new plastic lizard shines at other times besides just springtime, when it infuriates bedding bass, Yates said.

“This bait right now is prime in post-spawn (and later in early summer),” he said, noting it was reliable in the summer, fall and winter.

Mister Twister rolled out eight colors for the 7-inch long Super Lizard SI. They are bed time/sand, black red/sand, blue sapphire/sand, Carolina pumpkin/sand, green pumpkin/sand, June bug/sand, watermelon red/sand and watermelon seed/sand.

“This line is fantastic for the colors we selected,” Yates said. “Mister Twister knocked this one out of the park. I haven’t found one I don’t like. I absolutely love every one of them. I think any combination you pick up you’re going to love.”

In other words, considering the extra action of the soft plastic lizard, the hard part will be figuring out which color is best where, when and what bass anglers want to fish.
