Go white for sight-fishing

Pretty much any plastic lure will work to snatch big sows off beds, but Craig Graham has a particular affinity for a Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw.

“It’s got a lot of action,” he said. “Those legs kick, and I think it helps get a reaction bite.”

Lure color also isn’t important in terms of getting fish to bite, but Graham said he always throws a white craw for a very simple reason.

“It’s all visibility,” he said. “You can throw a set of car keys down there and they’ll bite it, but I can see that white craw so I know when they grab it.”

His normal tackle includes a heavy-action rod at least 7 feet long and a minimum of 20-pound line. I used 60-pound braid effectively during this trip.

He’ll rig his Speed Craw on a 4/0 hook under a 1/4-ounce sinker.

“For a 6-, 7-, 8-pounder, I’ll go to a 5/0 hook to have a little more meat to it,” Graham said.
