Big bass in June?

No question about it, largemouth bass are bigger in the springtime, especially the females which are chocked full of eggs before the spawn. But big bass bite in the summer, too. And they are no lightweights.

Five bass all weighing over 8 pounds isn’t the norm, but Taylor saw just that in a Majestic Big Bass Tournament of which he was director a couple years back. It was June. And most of the big fish caught came on buzzbaits. The largest one weighed 11.21 pounds.

“It’s amazing how many big bass are caught on buzzbaits this time of year,” he says. “All the guys who fish tournaments know that. If you throw a buzzbait, you won’t get that many bites, but the bites you get will be good ones.”

The Majestic Big Bass Tournament on D’Arbonne is always held the second weekend in June. In last year’s 26-hour event, the big fish weighed 9.45 pounds. The top six fish were all well over six pounds and 45 fish over five pounds were caught. It’s just an example of what you can expect if you launch a buzzbait in the direction of big-bass cover, Taylor says.
