Trout on the jetty

This was a great day to be on the water. There were calm winds and flat seas for once and the water was boiling with life. I was joined by Mark Hood from the M Hood Fishing YouTube channel.

I got to fish a jetty new to me outside of Empire. Jetties and rock shorelines are my favorite habitat around which to target speckled trout, and this one did not disappoint. This jetty lays alongside one bank of a channel between barrier islands and protects the shoreline from a deep and busy channel. The steep drop-off from the jetty into the channel was perfect for holding trout and other fish on this 88 degree F water temperature day.

This was a multi species catching event taking us from elation to heartbreak on consecutive casts. We never knew if the next strike would be a trout, a bull redfish, a shark eating our lure, or a shark eating the trout off our line.

I also got to test the Nomad Designs Vertrex vibing lure. This lure caught my eye at ICast 2023 and I included it in my story for the August edition of Louisiana Sportsman Magazine. I was very glad to be able to test it out on speckled trout so soon after encountering it at the show, and I was very impressed with the amount of attention it garnered from the speckled trout. This is a lure best suited to fishing in deeper water and our 10 foot drop-off into the channel was the perfect spot to experiment with the lure.
