Catching just about everything that swims in the marsh

Only fools venture into the Gulf Coast’s marshes hell-bent on catching only one species. Our coastal wetlands are loaded to the gills with a vast assortment of fish that come in all shapes, sizes, flavors, ethnicities and religions.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of fishing here is you never know — when you feel that hard tap on the end of your line or watch your cork plunge — exactly what species you’re about to reel in.

That was certainly true for me during a recent trip. I set out to catch whatever would bite, and just about everything did.

Winds were calm, and tides were high but falling.

Effective lures included a crab boil-colored Pro’s Choice soft stickbait, H&H smoke/red glitter curl-tail grub and an H&H gold No. 4 spinner teamed with a 1/4-ounce Deathgrip Jighead and shrimp creole-colored Matrix Shad.
