I am writing this column in late July, which means I have two months to get things in order for the upcoming season. On the other hand you are reading this column in September, which means that the deer season is here.

At the conclusion of last deer season, it was obvious that I would do whatever it took to hunt the archery season this year. Deer that had been so outgoing as evidenced by cameras for all of October and the first half of November suddenly disappeared from daylight come Nov. 21.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will hold youth waterfowl hunts on the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WCA) near Gueydan on Nov. 6 and 7. LDWF will sponsor the hunts to provide a quality experience for young waterfowl hunters.

For many, August and September are the times to get the bow out and begin shooting to get ready for bow season. It’s also the time people think about making improvements to their setup and getting an extra edge. A couple of things to think about in this quest are bow tuning and proper arrow flight.

Duck hunters will again have a 60-day season and be able to kill six birds each day if tentative season dates set today (Aug. 5) by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission is ultimately approved.

BP’s oil spill and searing record heat have made this a summer that most Louisiana outdoorsmen can’t wait to forget.
