LDWF provides hunters with feral hog trapping guidance for CWD Control Areas

As a reminder, Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Control Area regulations are in effect for portions of Deer Areas 1 and 2. The CWD Control Area expansion in 2025 is in response to a CWD confirmed positive wild deer in Catahoula Parish earlier this year.

The CWD Control Area Rule includes baiting restrictions, which specify:

  • Supplemental feeding, baiting, placement of bait, or hunting over bait is prohibited within the portion of the CWD Control Area designated as the CWD Enhanced Mitigation Zone.
  • Supplemental feeding and baiting is allowed in the portion of the CWD Control Area designated as the CWD Buffer Zone, but only by non-stationary, mechanical or electronic broadcast methods. The use of bait not normally ingested by deer is allowed for feral hog trapping, or by holders of bear harvest permits during the designated bear baiting period.

The baiting exception for feral hog trapping allows the use of bait not normally ingested by white-tailed deer. Traditional baits such as corn may be utilized if they are adulterated. Examples include mixing corn with blood meal or using soured corn (corn soaked in water for several days). Blood meal can be readily purchased at most big box retailers and local home improvement centers, making it an accessible option for trappers. The strong odor produced by soured corn effectively attracts feral hogs while deterring deer. Both of these methods have proven effective and offer a longer field life compared to other options.

The exception in the baiting regulation is intended to support trapping efforts aimed at controlling feral hogs, while reducing the artificial congregation of deer at trap sites.  Precautions taken by hunters can help slow the spread of CWD.
