Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a subject for alleged fishing violations in Plaquemines Parish on June 22.
Agents cited Sang Huynh, 48, of Bayou La Batre, Ala., for taking game fish using illegal methods, taking over the limit of Spanish mackerel, and for not possessing non-resident basic and saltwater fishing licenses.
Agents were on patrol when they made contact Huynh in Breton Sound on a large shrimp vessel.
During the inspection of the vessel, agents found red drum caught and retained using the shrimp trawls, which is an Illegal method of taking red drum. After further investigation, several other species of fish were found and inspected inside the hold.
Agents found Huynh in possession of 97 Spanish mackerel, 80 channel mullet, 51 harvest fish (butter fish), three flounder and two red drum. The limit for Spanish mackerel is 15 placing him 82 over his limit.
Failing to possess basic and saltwater non-resident fishing licenses and over limit of Spanish mackerel brings up to a $350 fine for each offense. Taking red drum using illegal methods carries up to a $750 fine.
Huynh also faces civil restitution totaling $208 for the replacement value of the illegally possessed fish.
Agents participating in the case are Lt. Adam Young, Senior Agent Shea Schexnaydre and Agent Austin Wiles.
