Peters’ huge bass caught on Strike King Red Eye Shad near Lowes Creek
Andrew Peters enjoyed a special fishing trip with his father, Dan, Friday afternoon at Toledo Bend on a day both won’t soon forget.
Launching about 4 from Midlake Campground, the anglers motored over to Lowes Creek.
“We caught a couple of short fish on a point, so I swung around and fished deeper,” Peters said.
Both anglers were throwing ½-ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad lipless crankbaits in 10 feet of water over submerged grass.
Peters was casting his lure with 15-pound Seaguar Red Label fluorocarbon spooled to a Daiwa Tatula reel on a 7-foot Daiwa Lexa rod.
“I was ripping the bait and letting it sink down again when the fish hit,” he said.
He remembers the bass pulling drag.
“I could tell it was a good fish, and then remembered we forgot the net in the truck,” Peters said.
The fish rose at one point and rolled over.
“That’s when I knew she was a big bass,” he said.
The angler brought the fish to the boat three nerve-wracking times before his dad finally was able to lip the bass.
“He handed her directly to me, and I placed her immediately into the livewell,” said Peters, of Nederland, Texas.
The big bass was his largest ever, surpassing a couple of 8-pounders in the past.
“I kept checking the livewell,” he said. “On my fourth look at her, she looked bigger than 10 pounds.”
The anglers motored back to the campground, trailered the boat and headed to Toledo Town and Tackle to weigh the giant bass on a certified scale for potential entry into the Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program.
“She officially weighed 10.89 pounds,” Peters said. “Its length was 23 7/8 inches, and its girth measured 21 ¼ inches.
“After weighing her, they tagged the bass. I was expecting a big fish to eventually come out of Lowes Creek – I’ve been fishing the area for some time.”
Since Peters’ huge bass was at least 10 pounds and was tagged and then released, he will receive a replica of the trophy courtesy of the Toledo Bend Lake Association.
Peters’ trophy bass is lunker No. 38 for the 2014-15 season.
