Teen downs turkey of a lifetime over opening weekend
Mississippi’s youth season opening weekend was good for 14-year-old Karyn Milazzo. With the help of her dad, Matt Milazzo, she was able to harvest her first gobbler, which was a gobbler of a lifetime. On Sunday morning, March 9, Karyn was able to bring home a big Wilkinson County gobbler that has a Magnolia records equivalent score of 142.
The big tom sported five beards. Beard number one was 8 3/8 inches, beard number two was 9 ½ inches, beard number three was 9 inches, beard number four was 9 ½ inches, and beard number five was 11 inches. The gobbler had long, sharp spurs, with one at 1 5/8 inches and the other at 1 3/8 inches. The bird weighed 18 pounds.
Karyn resides in St. James Parish in Paulina, La., and has been hunting with her dad near Woodville, Miss., for nine years. Karyn has taken several bucks where they hunt and has now added her first big gobbler to her resume. Her dad said that she is hooked on turkey hunting now.
Youth season
The Milazzos missed the opening day of youth season due to commitments to softball games. But they were able to score big on the second morning.
It was unexpectedly raining at first light, so they lingered at camp until the rain broke at 6:45. They quickly made their way to their intended setup near a clover food plot. Matt called for 30 minutes, but there were no responses. It was dead silence when suddenly Karyn and her dad heard a turkey fly down behind them. Then five more flew down.
The daughter and dad duo froze and didn’t make a move as the hens passed by them and made their way to the edge of the food plot. Matt decided to make a light call, and the big gobbler answered off to their left. The tom made one more gobble, and Matt told Karyn to raise her gun and get ready because the gobbler would be out in the clover plot in a second. And that’s precisely what happened. Karyn was able to squeeze off a killing shot at 30 yards with a load of number fours from her 20-gauge shotgun.
If Magnolia Turkey Records accepts the score, it will put the big Wilkinson County gobbler at No. 6 all-time for a non-typical gobbler in the state of Mississippi.
