LWFC approves NOI to amend turkey season in portions of East Carroll, Madison and Tensas parishes

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) approved a Notice of Intent on Nov. 2 to amend turkey season on Louisiana lands east of the Mississippi River in East Carroll, Madison and Tensas parishes.

These areas would be included in Area A, which will have a 30-day season (April 6-May 5, 2024) during the 2024 season.

In recent years, changes have been made to the turkey season in those three parishes to prevent further population decline. Turkey hunting is prohibited in East Carroll Parish and a portion of Madison Parish. Tensas Parish and the rest of Madison Parish are in Area C, which has the shortest season (April 6-21, 2024).

However, the lands that would be included in Area A by the NOI have viable turkey populations to allow for a longer season, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) staff have observed. These areas are only accessible from Mississippi and commonly referred to as islands or towheads.
