Governor Landry proclaims November, Wild Game Meat Donation Month

As Louisiana’s deer hunting season begins, Governor Landry asks Louisiana hunters to donate part or all of their harvest to families in need this holiday season. The holidays symbolize a season of giving and showing goodwill towards others. That is why, in conjunction with the National Rifle Association (NRA), Governor Landry has declared November, Wild Game Meat Donation Month in Louisiana.

The proclamation encourages hunters to donate surplus game to local organizations that distribute to the less fortunate such as Hunters for the Hungry and for non-hunters to consider financially supporting such organizations.

“We are calling upon the hunting community to join in the fight against hunger in Louisiana through donating game meat to organizations that serve those in need,” said Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Madison Sheahan. ”We hope that this month will serve as a reminder on the important role that hunting plays in the community and the responsibility we share as the Sportsman’s Paradise.”

The Louisiana Hunters for the Hungry (H4H) program, launched in cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), is hunters’ common-sense answer to fighting hunger, tapping into hunting’s role as an integral cultural component of Louisiana communities. Founded in the 1990s by a group of well-meaning hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, H4H is helping the hunting community route excess wild game to families who struggle with food security.

For families struggling with food access, protein can be the most expensive and hard to come by food source. That’s where hunters come in. Hunters can drop off their deer or hog to be processed at no cost to the hunter at any processor that participates in the H4H program. The Food Bank or other local agencies collect the meat from the processor for distribution, and the invoice from the processors is sent toH4H. Additionally, hunters may choose to keep the backstrap!
