Chuckie Franks passed away on Jan. 13 in Jonesboro
The longtime vice president of the Louisiana Handicapped Sportsman Hunting Club — a non-profit organization based in Winn Parish exclusively for disabled hunters — died last month at the age of 51.
Charles “Chuckie” Franks Jr. passed away on Jan. 13 shortly after wrapping up an afternoon hunt on club property near Dodson, according to his older brother Mitchell Franks.
“That was the last thing he ever did,” Mitchell Franks said with a smile. “He had to get in that deer stand.”
Chuckie Franks, of Marrero, became a quadriplegic after breaking his neck in an industrial accident in February of 1994.
“Even after he got hurt, it didn’t stop him. He did it all,” Franks said. “He actually shot his own rifle, and was still able to function and get around in the stand on his own.”
His brother inspired abled and disable hunters alike, and fittingly died doing what he loved most, his brother said.
“Deer hunting was 99 percent of his life,” Franks said. “Until the day he died, he never gave up. So just take life one day at a time and look forward to tomorrow, because you never know what’s going to happen.
“Even in his condition — in a wheelchair as long as he was — he just kept pushing to do more.”
