Kelly “Dump” Patrick doesn’t have a lot of fancy hunting gear. But he’s does have some favorites.
That starts with a single-shot .30-06 New England Handi Rifle handed down to him by his father.
Patrick shoots 150-grain Core-Lockt ammunition and wears standard Mossy Oak camo gear.
It’s all he’s ever used. It works.
He also wears a set of Duxback 3-D Leafy camo for bowhunting. He shots a Carbon Express X-force 350 bow, and uses Cedar Hill cover scents every time he goes in the woods.
He hunts in a variety of box stands, climbing stands, ground blinds and, on occasion, his lucky 5-gallon bucket.
“The most-important thing, though, is we never go in the woods early in the season without our Thermacell mosquito repellant devices,” Patrick said. “The mosquitoes around here will eat you up until it turns cold.”
It’s also important to use proper safety gear matched to how you are hunting, he said. There are a lot of ways to get hurt out there.
Patrick’s No. 1 advice is to put safety first, no matter what you are doing.
