The rich do indeed get richer.
If you’ve killed a trophy buck anytime in the last two years, you’re probably still floating on a cloud with a big No. 9 painted on the side.
You probably smile every time you glance at the mount, your eyes turn misty and the animal is alive again, walking in front of your cross hairs.
It’s a cliche’, but a big buck is truly a gift that keeps on giving.
And now it’s got the potential to give you even more.
As part of the Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show, Louisiana Sportsman magazine will host its first-annual Big Buck Contest. Entering is easy, and top-rate prizes are on the line.
The contest is open to whitetail deer killed during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, and prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
. Best In-State Buck
. Best Out-of-State Buck
. Best Bow/Muzzleloader Buck
. Best Youth Buck
To enter, just bring your mounted buck or intact rack to the Sportsmen’s Show during regular show hours on Friday or before noon on Saturday. You will be awarded a free pass to the show.
Retired Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries deer biologist and official Boone & Crockett scorer David Moreland will measure all deer, and the racks will be placed on display on the show grounds.
Racks that have already been B&C scored will be eligible provided the entrant brings in the certification showing the official score of the deer.
On Sunday, prizes will be awarded, with the Best In-State Buck receiving a check for $1,000. Best Out-of-State Buck will get $500. Best Bow/Muzzleloader Buck will receive a prize package that includes a Bushnell Trophy Cam trail camera and Ol’ Man climbing tree stand, provided by Bowie Outfitters. Best Youth Buck will receive a prize package that includes a Bushnell Trophy Cam trail camera and Gorilla climbing tree stand, provided by Bowie Outfitters.
The youth category is open to hunters who were 17 or younger at the time the kill occurred.
In addition, all entrants will be included in a random drawing for a Summit ladder stand, provided by Bowie Outfitters, and Bushnell Sport 600 Laser Range Finder.
Racks will be available for pickup on Sunday between 2-4 p.m.
All winners will be subject to polygraph testing, and the Sportsman reminds all potential entrants that intentionally defrauding a contest is a crime.
