More than 22,000 derelict traps disposed of since 2004, LDWF says
Volunteer boat owners and dockside helpers are needed to assist in the 2014 Derelict Crab Trap Rodeo on Saturday, Feb. 15 in Dularge.
According to a press release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Toby Voisin’s oyster dock, located at the end of Hwy. 315.
The Derelict Crab Trap Removal Program was initiated by LDWF in 2004, and now the annual event also is hosted with Coastal Conservation Association Louisiana, Audubon Nature Institute and Louisiana Sea Grant.
Abandoned traps interfere with other commercial fishing, create navigation hazards and reduce the visual appeal of the outdoors, according to a press release.
Volunteers are needed on the water collecting traps, as well as with dockside activities like unloading and stacking traps.
All volunteers receive a complimentary lunch, gift and also are entered into a raffle for a chance to win fishing and outdoor prizes, the release states.

In order the conduct the clean-up, licensed crab fishermen will receive a notice informing them to remove their traps from inside the closure area during the closure period.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22.
